The Sexist Side Of Karate

There’s a new martial arts film that hits theaters on July 19. This film might leave you with a little more to think about than "The Karate Kid" though. “The Art of Self Defense” stars Jesse Eisenberg as a man who decides to join a dojo after being brutally beaten. The film also stars Imogen Poots as a karate master who's being held back in her progression to black belt by her male counterparts. And the dojo is run by a murderous sensei who believes “real men”only listen to metal and that women will never be as good as men. On set, writer/director Riley Stearns took a decidedly opposite view than his fictional sensei, hiring mostly women to lead the production. That included the film’s stunt coordinator and fight choreographer, Mindy Kelly. John Horn recently sat down with Stearns and Kelly.

The Mouse Is Plagued By The Fox

Is Disney having buyer’s remorse? John talks with Variety's Brent Lang about the story he co-wrote with Rebecca Rubin: "The studio would be forgiven if it were having some regrets after absorbing 20th Century Fox, the company that once generated big box office with the likes of 'Avatar,' 'Life of Pi,' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' After 'Dark Phoenix' bombed earlier this summer, Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista’s action comedy 'Stuber' did little to instill more confidence in the film slate that Fox handed Disney as part of its $71.3 billion merger. So far, the Magic Kingdom has struggled when it comes to distributing movies that don’t fall under the studio’s squeaky clean umbrella."
The Surprising Appeal of Durand Jones & The Indications
The retro-soul band is from Bloomington, Indiana but has developed a devoted following among Mexican-Americans in Southern California who are fans of R&B oldies. The Frame contributor Melissa Dueñas attended the band's recent show in L.A. and spoke with the musicians and several of their fans.
