A skateboarding video diary gets personal

(Starts at 1:16)

When Bing Liu first picked up a video camera, it was mostly just a way to record his friends' skateboarding stunts and tricks. Growing up with turbulent home lives in Rockford, Illinois, Liu and his friends found refuge in skateboarding, and an outlet for their anger and pain. Over the years, Liu's side project filming his hometown friends became the documentary, "Minding the Gap." It is about skateboarding, but it's also an intimate exploration of the lasting effects of domestic abuse, the nature of masculinity, and how our upbringing shapes who we become as adults. Liu spoke with The Frame about his feature debut.
