A New Inroad For Telenovelas

Mexican soap operas are hugely popular, but they’re not known for insightful portrayals of LGBTQ characters. Homosexuality remains a stigma in some Latin American countries. Heterosexual characters get to fully navigate the twisting story lines of melodramatic telenovelas. But gay couples’ stories are left by the wayside. A new Mexican telenovela debuted in the U.S. on Univision last night and it’s attempting to upend that trend. Samantha Schmidt wrote about it for the Washington Post and she spoke about her story with guest host Chloe Veltman.
Inspired By The Boss
The film “Blinded by the Light” (opens Aug. 16) is set in the U.K. of the late 1980s. It's based on Sarfraz Manzoor’s biography, “Greetings from Bury Park.” As a teenager, he found listening to Bruce Springsteen helped him deal with his experiences as a child of immigrants from Pakistan. Manzoor tells his story to The Frame.
