How wildfires are still affecting the state, what it's like to attend a drive in dance and what to do this weekend.

State of Affairs

We've talked a lot about wildfires this week and last week, but they’re still here, chewing up the state. It seems like a big part of California’s working relationship with the Trump Administration right now revolves around them. Also, the Los Angeles Times makes a presidential endorsement, pretty sure you can correctly guess who. We jump into all of this on State of Affairs, our weekly peek at politics in the Golden State.

Bearing Witness

Mike Brown, Philando Castile, George Floyd... these are just a few of the Black men whose deaths at the hands of police have been documented in videos... then put online for the world to see. More recently and...closer to home...there was also the shooting death of 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee by LA County Sheriff's deputies. These videos spark outrage, protests and widespread calls for social justice... But what's the emotional impact on us when we watch them? How are these videos used by the media? And how do we remember the people whose deaths we see in real time?

Coronavirus: School Grading

Last spring, school districts across Southern California suspended their grading policies — a nod to how the coronavirus crisis had upended their students' lives at home. We meet a teacher who gave all of his students A's last spring; what's he doing now? And we also meet teachers from a school that maintained its normal grading policy as distance learning began — and they say it actually had good results.
