California prevents new offshore oil drilling

California won't allow any new oil pipelines off its coast. Over the weekend, Governor Jerry Brown signed two pieces of legislation prohibiting any new infrastructure that would support offshore oil drilling and development. The legislation comes in response to a Trump Administration proposal earlier this year that would have expanded drilling in federal waters, including off California's coast.

Insurance and Wildfires

California wildfires are burning more than forests and homes. They're tearing through people's savings. There were $845 million in claims from the Carr and Mendocino Complex fires in Northern California this summer, according to the state's Department of Insurance. That's in addition to $2 billion in insurance claims filed after the Thomas fire and other blazes torched Southern California this past winter. As the cost of fire recovery piles up, some insurance companies are dropping coverage for homeowners because it's getting too costly.
