California will be the first state in the country to mandate later school start times, Native Americans celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day.

We look at the bills Governor Gavin Newsom signed over the weekend — and which ones he left out. Among the many bills he signed were AB 54 — the California Beverage Container Recycling Law — and SB 328, which pushes back school start times in the state. Plus, we visit L.A.'s celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day.

What Bills Governor Newsom Signed - And Which Ones He Didn't

The governor wrapped up this latest period of bill signing and while he vetoed some 100 pieces of legislation, many lawmakers got what they wanted. We discuss the larger takeaways from his actions and what it says about Gavin Newsom's role leading the state.

California Beverage Container Recycling Law

One of the many laws Governor Newsom signed over the weekend was the California Beverage Container Recycling Law, AB 54. Effective immediately, the law will set up mobile recycling centers in areas most affected by the August shutdown of RePlanet, which was the state's largest operator of recycling redemption centers.

Later School Start Times

Soon California's public schools will start later in the morning -- after 8:30 for high schools. Health and safety officials say it's a good move, but not everyone likes the idea.

Fires and Evacuation

During the wildfires this weekend, fire experts estimate about 10 percent of people ignore evacuation orders, and another 25 percent wait around to see how bad the fire is before leaving. KPCC's Sharon McNary has the story of one woman in that wait-and-see group.

Indigenous Peoples' Day

Today marks the second annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Los Angeles, an official city holiday that celebrates Native Americans and their culture. The second Monday of October used to be Columbus Day in the city, but that changed in 2017. Over the weekend, at LA’s second annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration, tribes from around the county gathered in Grand Park downtown for an evening of dance and music on the steps of city hall.

Becoming Superman

L.A.'s Comic-Con took over the L.A. Convention Center this weekend. So we thought we would share a chat that highlights a guy who is a virtual one man Comic-Con, with writing credits from He-Man and She-Ra to The Changeling. J. Michael Straczynski's work has been in almost any media you can imagine. For 40 years, he wore different hats -- as a TV show runner, comic book writer  and screenwriter. And he dives into it all with his recent memoir, "Becoming Superman: My Journey From Poverty to Hollywood."
