Filmmakers never know what will be going on in the world when their movies finally reach the public. But for Alex Gibney, dropping the trailer of his new movie the day that the world learned that President Trump tested positive for the coronavirus was all too timely. Gibney's film “Totally Under Control” is about how the coronavirus pandemic spread and, in particular, how the Trump administration responded to it.

Late last month, the independent bookstore Vroman’s in Pasadena sent out an email asking for help. Staffers weren’t sure how they were going to make it past the holidays unless people started placing orders. Lots of orders. It’s a story playing out at indie bookstores everywhere, so we sent KPCC’s Giuliana Mayo out to see how LA’s shops are holding up in the time of COVID-19.
