Local Detention Centers

The federal government is pushing for local detention for adults and kids in spite of state and local officials' efforts. ICE wants to open more detention centers in California, including So Cal, ahead of a law barring new ICE detention contracts that takes effect in January; meanwhile, HHS wants to open a new shelter for migrant children in the San Fernando Valley, despite city and county officials' states wishes that they not.

Purple Project: The 19th Amendment

You'll hear Levar Burton on the amendment that ended slavery... and Roxane Gay on a citizen's right to vote.  Plus, there's artist Shepard Fairey, actor Peter Segal and many more.  It's part of the nationwide Purple Project for Democracy, a non-partisan campaign to recommit to democratic values and institutions. Today, Roxanne Gay recites the 19th amendment.

As part of our Project Purple coverage, Take Two uncovers the often overlooked but most powerful advocates of the Women’s Suffrage Movement – African American Women. Take Two will focus on their fight for voting rights for all women in the West, and subsequently the entire country.
