Beyond Mad Max, here's our picks for great post-apocalyptic films

This weekend the highly anticipated remake of the Mad Max film hits theatres.

Already, its been hailed as an amazing take on the post-apocalyptic genre.

But the film isn't alone when it comes to depicting how the uncertain future would look like. We spoke to our regular contributor, film historian Mark Jordan Legan, for a look at the best films of this genre.

First up, the film "Snowpiercer" from acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-ho. The film takes place on a futuristic super train that holds the last human survivors after a government attempt to stop global warming created a new deadly ice age.

A fun, cult favorite from 1973 is "Soylent Green." It stars Charlton Heston and in his final film performance, Hollywood legend Edward G. Robinson.

And Charlton Heston was also a star in 1971’s Omega Man. The film was based on the famous Richard Matheson novel I am Legend, and there have been three film adaptations.  1964’s "The Last Man on Earth," with Vincent Price, Heston’s "Omega Man,"  and then 2007’s I am Legend," with Will Smith.

The basic story is after a global pandemic turns the world population into mutant zombie-like creatures, Robert Neville is the only unaffected survivor.

And finally, "Children of Men," from Alfonso Cuaron, the director of "Gravity," and "Y Tu Mama Tambien," Clive Owen stars in this futuristic thriller set in 2027 where two decades of human infertility has mankind teetering on the edge of extinction. But everything changes when a militant group reaches out to former radical, now government worker Clive Owen with the earth shattering news a refugee is pregnant.

Why Harriet Tubman shouldn't be on the 20 dollar bill

There have been a lot of conversations this week about the effort to put a woman on the 20-dollar bill. The organization responsible for the effort, Women On 20s, held a public vote on four finalists and the winner was Harriet Tubman, a former slave turned abolitionist.

But Michelle Taylor, who blogs under the name Feminista Jones, has suggested that the effort to get a woman on currency, especially Tubman, is misguided.

'Sunken City' in San Pedro could reopen to the public

Sunken City in San Pedro was once a six-acre housing development of bungalows overlooking the Pacific, before it began sliding into the sea in the 1920s. Reminders of the community remain and, though officially off limits to visitors, the site is a big draw for all sorts of urban adventurers, even if they are trespassing.

This week a local councilman began exploring plans to open the area to the public. Sam Lubell, West Coast Editor of The Architect's Newspaper, recently wrote about the lost neighborhood for the New York times.

Quentin Dupieux on his nightmarish Hollywood satire 'Reality'

Quentin Dupieux on his nightmarish Hollywood satire 'Reality'

The new film "Reality" is about a cameraman named Jason with big dreams. He wants to make a sci-fi thriller about television sets taking over the world.

He's even found a wealthy producer willing to finance it, on one condition. He must find the perfect groan, the groan people would make as the TVs destroy them.

It's a pretty strange concept for a film, but maybe not so strange from a man whose first American film, "Rubber," was about a car tire that comes to life and starts murdering people with its psychic powers.

Writer and director Quentin Dupieux joined Take Two to discuss "Reality."

Reality opens May 15 at the Arena Cinema in Hollywood.
