SCOTUS rulings impact on CA, LA Times final building tour, fun things to do this weekend

The impact of this week's Supreme Court rulings on California, a final tour of the Los Angeles Times building downtown, what to do this weekend.

It's been a big news week, as the U.S. Supreme Court made several rulings that will have big impacts in California. Plus, we visit the iconic downtown headquarters of the Los Angeles Times and take a last tour of the building before the paper moves to El Segundo. And we speak with an LAPD sergeant about the department's decision to add 20 electric bicycles to its patrol fleet.

When religion is used to defend the government

(Starts at 17:49)

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was quoted earlier this month as saying "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes." This doesn’t sit well with many faith leaders, such as Nancy Frausto. She's an Episcopal priest in Long Beach, and was brought to the U.S. at age seven, without immigration papers. KPCC’s Josie Huang reports.

Los Angeles Police Department adds e-bikes to its bicycle fleet

(Starts at 22:46)

You're sitting in traffic when suddenly a police officer's patrol lights and sirens come on. But as the vehicle attempts to weave in and out of the lanes, traffic stops it from making progress. It's times like these that bicycle officers come into play. And this week, they're getting an upgrade. Twenty electric bicycles are joining the Los Angeles Police Department fleet and could eventually replace its pedal-powered bikes.

Guest:

  • LAPD Sergeant Sam Gong, assistant project manager for the patrol e-bike program
