A look at two innovative programs launched by L.A. area police departments. The Huntington Beach Police Department will begin testing a pair of drones this summer. Also, the Los Angeles Police Department has added 20 electric bicycles to its bicycle patrol fleet.
California's online privacy bill
Online privacy has become a big issue in recent months. Facebook admitted the political data firm, Cambridge Analytica, got data from almost 90 million users without consent. That's raised questions about what websites are allowed to do with users' information. But a new state bill would give Californians some more power over thier privacy.

The wild week in immigration policies
There is a LOT going on this weekend when it comes to the issue of immigration in this country. The house delivered a crushing defeat Wednesday to an immigration bill that was designed to be a compromise between different Republican factions. This followed news Tuesday night that a federal judge in San Diego ordered the Trump Administration to immediately reunite families that have been separated at the border. Meanwhile, we are still unclear about how those kids take from parents are doing in facilities here – or what federal agencies are doing to return them….and despite all the question marks, Congress is about to go on recess.

Expo Line Upzoning
The L.A .city's Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) has recommended the council adopt a proposal to re-zone property along the Expo Line. "Upzoning" as it’s called, means the area surrounding the westside transportation corridor would be slated for taller, more dense housing units. Upzoning isn’t always popular but its intention is to lower the cost of housing through simple supply and demand economics. We explore what this could mean for the west side.

Huntington Beach Police Department will test drones this summer
Drones are everywhere these days. The flying, remote control vehicles are a favorite of hobbyists, photographers, and increasingly police departments. Law enforcement in Seal Beach and Laguna Beach have them. L.A. county even has a few. And while there are benefits to using unmanned aircraft in police work, there's also a concern that surveillance is going too far. But one local police department opted to address privacy concerns head on.

SoCal shaping soccer stars of tomorrow
As the world's focus goes to Russia for the once-in-four-years soccer World Cup, American viewers will be left without a team. In a major upset, the U.S. failed to qualify, sending the national soccer program into a tailspin. But Southern California has shaped up to be the nation's training ground for young players. This summer, several sites will host camps to develop new talent. We visit a camp to get the sounds and texture of training, talk to hopeful players and coaches and gauge the role that SoCal is playing in the bid for the next World Cup.
