Newsom Budget Deal

Governor Gavin Newsom reached a tentative budget deal with the California legislatures, abandoning some of the deep cuts he outlined earlier in the pandemic.

Hollywood the Sequel Preview

It's not an understatement to say that we're living in a tumultuous time. But where there is a crisis there is also opportunity. One place where there's an opportunity for change is in the entertainment business. That story is being explored in a new show from LAist studios—the podcast production arm of KPCC. It's called "Hollywood: The Sequel" and the first episode comes out tomorrow. It's hosted by The Frame's John Horn.

Police Reform: Jorja Leap

The L.A. City Council has been holding one meeting after another to discuss the Los Angeles Police Department its response to the continuous protests against police violence in communities of colors. The council has largely been focused on city finances and how much of the LAPD's budget should be redirected to other community-based programs. We continue our series of conversations with various experts about how THEY would reform the department.

Police School Environment

Advocates have long said the presence of police on school campuses could negatively affect the learning environment. And now, they're renewing their calls to remove officers from schools. And, as KPCC's Carla Javier reports, this time — administrators are paying more attention. 

OC Update

Coronavirus-related hospitalizations and deaths in Orange County have been on the rise in recent weeks. Rates have now surpassed those in neighboring counties, presenting a major hurdle to local health officials.

Coronavirus Disneyland Update

The happiest place on earth plans to reopen its gates soon. Despite cases of COVID-19 increasing throughout the state, Disneyland is currently set to welcome guests, again, just a few weeks from now – July 17th. If that’s too soon to some of you … it’s later than other amusement parks in the area! Pending state approval, both Universal Studio Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain plan to reopen NEXT WEEK on July 1st. But there are some hurdles in the way.
