Why the FBI raided the LADWP Monday, Trump administration plans to expand quick deportations of illegal immigrants, LA's Original Farmers Market turns 85.

Condor managers taking blood samples from the 57 wild condors in Arizona both before and after hunting season find that all 57 condors test positive for contamination by lead matching the isotropic fingerprint of the lead commonly used in ammunition, and that those levels rise significantly by the end of the season. Many of the condors become so sick that biologists must re-capture them for lead-poisoning treatments. Several die each year. Experts believe the condors are ingesting the lead as they scavenge gut piles left behind hunters because lead bullets shatter and fragment inside the kill. Officials in Arizona are encouraging hunters to use copper bullets instead of lead-based ammunition and in California, a coalition of conservation groups has sued the California Fish and Game Commission in an effort to force a ban on lead ammunition in Condor ranges. The condors in the Marble Canyon and Vermillion Cliffs area easily fly as far west as Lake Mead, by way of the Grand Canyon, and to Zion National Park and far into Utah. With a wingspan up to 9 ½ feet, they are the largest flying birds in North America. In 1982, when the world population of California condors dropped to only 22 and extinction was believed eminent, biologist captured them and began a captive breeding and release program which has increased the total population to 278, of which 132 now live in the wild in Arizona, California, and Baja California, Mexico. FBI Raids LADWP

Yesterday, agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power. While the orders for the raid are under seal, reports say LADWP's settlement over inaccurate billing may be the reason.

Immigration Deportation

The Trump administration plans to significantly expand its power to quickly deport undocumented immigrants who have illegally entered the United States within the past two years. It uses a deportation process that bypasses immigration judges.

Beach Access Fees

At a meeting today, the Los Angeles County supervisors voted to increase those parking fees for the first time in ten years. The vote also sets new fees for RV campers and special events like parties. Original Los Angeles Farmers Market Turns 85

There's nothing like a quiet morning at the Original Farmers Market on Fairfax and 3rd street in mid-city. Today, it's home to more than 80 merchants, selling everything from apples to pie to sushi. But 85 years ago this month, in July 1934, the very first vendors set up shop. It's been running as the Original Farmers Market ever since. In addition to the market celebrating its 85th year, it's also hosting its annual Taste of Farmers Market event Tuesday from 5-9 pm.

The California Condor

From the brink of extinction thanks to the efforts of thousands of people. North America's largest flying bird — the California Condor — has reached a landmark in its population recovery.  A thousand condor chicks have hatched in the wild in the Western United States since 1987. That marks a dramatic recovery from 1982, when there were just 22 wild condors.
