Why US,China Tensions Could Affect LA, How COVID Is Impacting Childcare Centers in California, On The Lot

The U.S. just told China to close its consulate in Houston, how COVID is affecting childcare providers and the latest on Hollywood.
President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping attend a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka last June. The two leaders spoke by phone earlier this month. Since the coronavirus outbreak, China has let in some experts from the World Health Organization but has not yet allowed in a team from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

U.S. - China Relations

The US State Department has told China to close its consulate in Houston. Take Two looks at whether this is a sign of straining relations between the US and China and what it means for LA, which depends heavily on good ties with the country.

Prison Update

COVID-19 continues to spread in some state prisons. At least 40 prisoners have died, along with three staff members. Many of the recent cases are at San Quentin -- the result of what some California lawmakers are calling a botched transfer from one of the hardest-hit prisons in Chino.

California Childcare Study

There are a little over 7,000 child care providers operating in Los Angeles County right now. A new study from UC Berkeley's Center for the Study of Child Care Employment shows many of these providers are losing income and feel like they're putting their own health at risk to continue operating.

Coronavirus: Nail Salons Reopening

Under normal circumstances, state regulations prohibit places like hair and nails salons from offering services outside…but in a pandemic ...nothing is normal. So on Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom waived those regulations to allow these places to continue to work out in the open air, which is deemed a little safer than operating indoors right now. But it isn't so simple. Yesterday, we heard from a hair stylist and salon owner about how she's dealing with the guidelines ...so today we turn to the nail world.
