LAUSD announces campuses won't reopen at the start of the school year, KPCC's Erick Galindo shares his story as a Mexican American, and what we're learning from close shark encounters.

LA Unified Campuses to Remain Closed in Fall

Los Angeles Unified School District will not reopen campuses this fall. That was announced this morning by LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner, which means that kids will continue with remote learning on August 18th … until further notice. This comes as LA County continues to see a spike in new coronavirus cases.

Ask An Expert: Schools

As we've heard Los Angeles Unified - the second largest school district in the country - will NOT resume class in person this fall. The Governor applauded the decision earlier today but did not comment on how other districts in the state might reopen in the fall. Other smaller school district in our region are preparing to start with a hybrid schedule - some days in person and others at home, online...while some private institutions are considering going back full time with more teachers and a whole lot of safety measures in place. It's a difficult time for all involved so let's dig further into the science of what we know about COVID-19 and children.

Coronavirus Rent Relief in July

The city of Los Angeles' $103 million rent relief program is up and running...The program— which is administered by the city's Housing and Community Investment Department— began accepting applications this morning at 8 a.m. and will do so until Friday at midnight.

Race in LA: Erick Galindo

Let's move on now to the latest installment in our new series Race in LA. In it -- we ask Angelenos how race and identity shape their day-to-day lives. The essays, written by both community contributors and LAist staffers, are published each week. California Shark Survey

You may not realize it—and maybe you don’t want to—but when you’re swimming in the ocean it’s entirely possible that a shark is hanging out nearby. A team of researchers from Cal State Long Beach wanted to better monitor those close encounters, so they deployed drones, swimming robots and DNA analysis to do it.
