LAPD Budget Cuts
For weeks now there have been calls to defund the Los Angeles Police Department... and today the city council voted 12 to 2 to cut $150 million from its budget. The move will cut hiring and bring staffing levels down to below 10,000 sworn officers - all things that would have been unthinkable even a few months ago - and LA Coucilman Curren Price led the charge.

LA School Police Cuts
The Los Angeles School Board of Education moved to cut the budget of the LA school police by $25 million. It’s budget was $70 million. The 4-3 vote came late last night after a 13-hour meeting and was supported by board members Monica Garcia, Jackie Goldberg, Nick Melvoin and Kelly Gonez.

The city of LA has created a new department to deal with discrimination, called the Department of Civil and Human Rights. Its new leader explains the goals of her new agency.

Desert Fire
Earlier this week a fire ripped through the small town of Niland near the Salton Sea. 40 homes burned and one person has died. And with 57 percent of residents living below the poverty line, the fire has put a new strain on the community. Elijah Bañaga is a pastor who lives in the nearby city, Calipatria, but has family members living in Niland.
