The deal announced a few hours ago to reopen the government is just temporary only lasting three weeks. At that point, the president said that if Congress doesn't reach a compromise, the government will either shut down on February 15th, or he may indeed declare a national emergency. So, the negotiations continue between Republicans and Democrats.

Pay for Federal Workers

President Trump announced an end to the government shutdown earlier today. The federal workers who had been furloughed or forced to work without pay for the past 35 days are expecting their checks. But exactly when those workers will receive their back pay was unclear.

Immigration politics continue to grip the nation, but in Los Angeles, the debate over immigration is playing out at the jails. New L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva campaigned hard on the promise that he would limit the department's practice of handing over immigrant inmates to ICE agents. But it's far from clear how much limiting he'll do and how many fewer people will actually be deported as a result.
