LA REACTS TO THE 59TH INAUGURATION
There was a lot of excitement being felt around Southern California as well. We heard from listeners Lance Blair and Ann Hymes and spoke to mother and daughter duo Carolyn and Dallas Fowler. Carolyn is a new member of the Democratic National Committee and her daughter Dallas Fowler is founder of HEIRSPAC, which stand for "Helping Empowered Individuals Reach Success"; she is also on California Coalition for Clean Water reliability. We talked to them WAY back in 2016 before Trump was elected when they to talk about their support for two different Democratic candidates at the time: daughter Dallas was with Bernie Sanders and Carolyn was with Hillary Clinton. So today, as a new administration takes office, we wanted to check back in and see where they stand on their differences.

HISTORY MADE: L.A. LOCAL - AND FIRST YOUTH POET LAUREATE - AMANDA GORMAN RECITES AT THE INAUGURATION
Angeleno Amanda Gorman, who became the first ever Youth Poet Laureate in LA a few years ago, recited her poem, “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration - a work she finished days after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. We hear that poem and get reaction from one of her mentors, who worked with her at the non-profit WriteGirl where she found her way to poetry.

Today in his inaugural address President Joe Biden said that democracy is "fragile." He's in part referring to the insurrection that took place at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Maritza Bushman knows something about living in a fragile democracy. In 1973 she was in her native home of Santiago Chile when the military – backed by the CIA – overthrew the democratically-elected president, Salvador Allende. She told her daughter, KPCC producer Monica Bushman about that experience and her take on what happened at the US Capitol 14 days ago.
