Overnight camping has been suspended in Joshua Tree due to the partial government shutdown. A team of volunteers are maintaining the park, cleaning the toilets and picking up trash because staffers have been furloughed.

The government shutdown lingers 

President Trump and congressional leaders met today for a briefing on border security - which is the issue at the heart of the decision to shut down the government. Not much came of it.  Almost two weeks into the shutdown and talks remain at a stalemate. Where will negotiations go from here and what be the effect if the two sides cannot come to terms?

Joshua Tree 

Overnight campers at Joshua Tree National Park will have to vacate starting Wednesday, the 2nd, due to the partial government shutdown and any staff will be sent home. Already, most workers have been off the job, leaving the park without trash pickup and other maintenance.

Giving up Plastics 

The world's population dumps about 9 million tons of plastic into the ocean each year. If nothing changes, scientists estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic waste in the ocean than fish. KPCC reporter Jill Replogle has been pondering these figures. And she has decided to explore what it would mean to cut plastic waste from her own life.

Craigslist Fentanyl 

It's kinda like the internet's one-stop shop. A site for everything from job postings to vacation rentals to used furniture. I'm talking, of course, about Craigslist. But in the last few months, the site has emerged as a major new marketplace for illicit drugs.

Strike Ripple Effects 

The union representing teachers in LA's public schools – United Teachers Los Angeles - has called for a strike on January 10th. Teachers are asking for higher pay, smaller class sizes and more resources like nurses and counselors in schools. After more than a year of contract negotiations, the union and the district deadlocked before Christmas ... making a strike all the more likely.  If it happens, teachers AROUND California will be watching … as districts throughout the state grapple with similar issues.

Pop up stores L.A. 

Pop up shops were en vogue this holiday season – those stores open only for a short, temporary time, stocked with all sort of goods from Halloween through Christmas. They are becoming a more frequent sight on the LA retail scene with an increase in vacant stores due to closings like Toys R Us and other businesses.
