What would you say is the stereotype of the average Republican? Older, male, white? According to the non-partisan Pew Research Center, that's pretty much a snapshot of the GOP base in the United States. And that reality has come to hurt Republicans here in California. Maybe that's why at its convention this weekend the California Republican Party had a seemingly "come to Jesus" moment. The group made history by choosing a woman, Jessica Patterson, as its new chair. She's a 38-year old Latina mother of two who's the CEO of a recruitment and training program for party candidates (California Trailblazers) That would have been surprising enough but the California GOP kept the hits coming. Their new vice-chair is East Bay Taiwanese immigrant Peter Kuo and the new treasurer is Greg Gandrud who is openly gay.

Single-Use Plastics

California could follow the European Union in phasing out single-use plastics. A group of legislators is introducing a bill that would require 75 percent of single-use plastic packaging and products made or sold here to be phased out or recycled by 2030. It's a major leap from reducing plastic straw distribution last year.

Schiff on Mueller

Arab-American Census

Americans of Arabic and Middle Eastern descent have long been counted as "white" on the census. They almost got their own category for 2020, but that's off the table now. Community organizers will urge Arab Americans to identify on the census on as "other" - not as white. But as KPCC's Leslie Berestein Rojas reports, racial identity is a squishy thing —even within a single family.
San Francisco Marijuana Records Expunged

A year ago, San Francisco's district attorney sought to expunge stand-alone marijuana convictions from people's records. Under Prop 64, which legalizes the use of marijuana, allows some with prior pot convictions to get those records wiped. But because of how onerous the process is, the city of San Francisco wanted to help. Well, thanks to a handy algorithm, the DA's office has now completed its task.
