The essays... written by both community contributors and LAist staffers... are published each week. The hope is that these stories fuel meaningful, authentic conversations about our lived experiences as a certain race or ethnicity. This week... contributor Shirlee Smith shares her essay about first realizing how others viewed her because of the color of her skin...when she was 18...back in 1956. You can read her full essay here.
