California and Feds Agree To Thin Millions of Acres of Forests, Nursing Home Residents Remain on Lock Down, Kobe Day

State officials signed an agreement to establish forest management strategies, many nursing home residents remain on lock down and it's Kobe day in LA today.

Federal Forest Thinning

In an effort to reduce wildfire risks, state officials signed an agreement last week with the federal government that establishes long-term forest management strategies. Among other actions, the plan agrees to thin out 1-million acres of forest and wildlands annually by 2025. We talk about the deal and its significance.

Coronavirus: Nursing Homes

Back in March, nursing homes across the nation locked down. More than two thousand of LA County's medically fragile nursing home residents died from COVID-19 -- at the same time new rules kept other residents largely confined to their rooms. Now, months later many nursing home residents remain locked up. And in some cases, leaving could result in eviction. KPCC's Jackie Fortier has the story. 

Kobe Day Part 1

Today is officially Kobe Bryant Day in LA. He died at the end of January - along with his daughter Gianna and 7 others when his plane crashed in Calabasas...sending Los Angeles into a period of collective mourning. Tonight, the Lakers are wearing special Black Mamba jerseys and people all over the LA area are paying respects in front of the many murals painted in his and Gigi's honor. So today we are doing something special too. For the remainder of the show, we are going to play - almost in its entirety - the Kobe Bryant episode of California Love, the podcast from LAist studios, hosted by Walter Thompson-Hernandez. Kobe...in all his greatness...and with all his faults ... meant a lot to Walter and, in many ways, helped him find his path in life.
