California Coronavirus Update

Dr. Sonia Angell, California's Department of Public Health Director, has stepped down. In a letter to her staff, released by the California Health and Human Services Agency, Dr. Angell did not provide a specific reason for her departure. The announcement comes after state health officials recently announced an underreporting of coronavirus cases due to technical issues with CalREDIE, the state's electronic lab reporting system. Today on Take Two, we talk to Sacramento Bee reporter Sophia Bollag for the latest.

Coronavirus Nursing Home Deaths

Residents and staff at some nursing homes in LA County weren’t tested until months into the pandemic. At one nursing home in LA, residents were tested on May 22, but an outbreak had already been underway. At least 16 people there have died. Family members are grappling for answers. KPCC's Elly Yu has the story. 

USC's Anti-Racism Reforms

As conversations over racial inequality continue across the country, students at the University of Southern California have been calling for anti-racism reforms on their campus. USC’s Black Student Assembly has been one of the groups at the forefront of these efforts… calling on the university to defund and demilitarize its Department of Public Safety, among other things. In response, USC President Carol Folt has presented a series of actions to - quote - “confront anti-Blackness and systemic racism” at the university, including creating a community advisory board to oversee the school’s Department of Public Safety, making bias training mandatory and creating a task force to address issues concerning race. But some students say these reforms don’t go far enough.
