Councilmember Nithya Raman Embraces Judge Carter Homeless Order; Says Change Coming Soon

It has been a big week for the issue of homelessness in LA. Mayor Eric Garcetti unveiled a proposed budget of almost $1 billion to tackle homelessness. Then Judge David O. Carter ordered the city to move every unhoused person on Skid Row into housing or shelter by October.

Depending How You Slice It, LA's Police Budget Actually Increased

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s budget proposals announced earlier this week calls for a slight increase in the amount of money going to the Los Angeles Police Department. This, after the city council voted to cut the budget last year in the wake of protests over the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. The roughly $11.2 billion budget allocates almost $2 billion for the LAPD, but also money for a program that aims to stop armed police responses to all 9-1-1 calls.

How High Levels of Pollution in Pacoima is Affecting One Family

This week we are delving into the environmental risks the northeast San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Pacoima faces today. The predominantly Latino neighborhood is one of most pollution-burdened communities in California. Our series is part of Covering Climate Now... a global collaborative of more than 400 media outlets, focusing attention on the climate emergency. It's all pegged to Earth Day, which is TODAY. To get a sense of how this pollution has impacted its residents, KPCC's Caroline Champlin met up with a family hear what it's like living with poor air quality every day.
