Coronavirus Campaigning

It was just last month, but the California primary feels like a lifetime ago. With local results now certified, several highly competitive contests have taken shape. But politicians are facing a new reality: no in-person contact with volunteers, donors or potential voters. KPCC's Libby Denkmann reports on how local candidates are campaigning in the time of coronavirus

Coronavirus Air Quality Update

It’s a rainy day here in LA — but lately, the skies have been clearer than ever. On Twitter, Angelenos have been posting photos where you can see Catalina Island from Griffith Park. On the surface, it seems like the clear skies are a result of lower pollution levels, with less commuting and travel…. but the story is a bit more complicated.

Coronavirus Special Education

Teaching students with disabilities is hard enough in normal times. Now, try doing it online. The coronavirus has forced this challenge on public schools across California. Many school districts are scrambling to find ways to deliver common special education services remotely. But in the meantime, many parents say these services — like physical or behavior therapy — aren't happening. And even when they resume, some parents wonder if they can be as effective online. KPCC's Kyle Stokes reports.

Coronavirus Grocery Guy

California officials are calling this week a critical one in the battle against the novel coronavirus. In Los Angeles County and elsewhere in the state, health officials are urging people to stay home and, if possible, to arrange for the delivery of groceries and other necessities. KPCC's Stephanie O'Neill takes us to the Ventura County town of Ojai where one resident is providing free shopping for those most at risk.

Coronavirus Getty Social Media

When The Getty Center closed its doors in response to the coronavirus, it didn't close off its collection. The museum used social media to ask people to recreate its artworks using stuff around the house, and it's become an online phenomenon. We discuss where the idea came from and how to engage audiences even if they can't see art up close.

Chicano Batman

The LA-based rock outfit, Chicano Batman, represents a wide range of musical styles from ranchera music to oldies to West Coast hip hop. They wrote their new album “Invisible People” about the lack of Latino representation in the media. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band cancelled their album tour. Now, they’re finding new ways to connect with fans like teaching online guitar lessons. We heard from the band.
