Trauma and gang violence

It was there on Sunday that rapper and community leader Ermias Asghedom — known as Nipsey Hussle — was shot and killed. On Tuesday, police arrested 29-year-old Eric Holder in connection with that shooting. The death of such a visible figure has renewed a focus on - not just violence in communities of color - but also the emotional effects it has on those that live in them. So what are those effects, and what can be done to help?

The latest on the college admissions scandal

Celebrity parents Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin appeared in federal court today. They were among 33 parents accused of rigging test scores or paying bribes to cheat the admissions process at prestigious universities. 10 of them appeared in court today.

OC Homeless Shelter

Come Friday, five new homeless shelters will have opened in Orange County in as many months. The newest will be in Costa Mesa. And at least three more are scheduled to open later in the year. By many measures, it's a major accomplishment for a county that just three years ago had zero public, year-round shelters for the homeless and thousands of people sleeping on the street.

Senior MediCal

California lawmakers are working to supplement the Affordable Care Act for seniors in the Golden State. A package of bills is currently being considered that COULD help low-income seniors and disabled adults qualify for Medi-Cal.

The shadow hanging over this weekend's Santa Anita Derby

This coming Saturday SHOULD be the biggest day for Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. That's when the Santa Anita Derby and Handicap takes place setting the stage for the Kentucky Derby. But the track has been under a cloud because of the 23 horse deaths that have happened there since December 26th. And earlier this week, California Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congresswoman Judy Chu ... whose district includes the area both say that racing should be called off.
