KPCC Critics Comment On Chris Plummer, Jean-Claude Carriere Deaths, Plus Variety’s Apology To Carey Mulligan
The world of film lost two icons recently. Christopher Plummer, well known for his role in “Sound of Music,” died last week. And the French Oscar-winning screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere passed away earlier this week. FilmWeek critics Lael Loewenstein, Peter Rainer and Wade Major share their thoughts on both their careers. Plus, we discuss the backlash surrounding Variety’s apology to Carey Mulligan after the actress spoke out against a portion of a critic’s review of her film “Promising Young Woman,” which she felt focused on her physical looks and appearance.

Viggo Mortensen On His Directorial Debut And Where His Inspiration For ‘Falling’ Came From
Viggo Mortensen, known for his acting role in the Lord of The Rings trilogy, made his directorial debut this year with the new film “Falling.” The film, although fictional, draws inspiration from Mortensen’s own life. It examines the dynamic of father/son relationships driven by both generational and geographic divides. Mortensen wrote, directed and starred in the film in addition to composing its score. KPCC’s John Horn talked with Mortensen about the film at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. “Falling” is available now on video on demand platforms.
