Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) was an openly gay, civil rights activist, pacifist, and an advisor to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. While he is best known for being the principal organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, he played an active, though often quiet, role in non-violent civil rights activism throughout his life. Now 60 years after the March on Washington, Rustin’s activism and legacy — often produced behind the scenes due to his sexuality — have been highlighted in a new film starring Emmy award-winning actor Colman Domingo. Today, Larry Mantle sits down with the actor to discuss taking on the role of Rustin.
