FilmWeek Marquee: ‘Empire Of Light,’ ‘Emancipation,’ ‘The Whale’ and ‘One Fine Morning’

Larry Mantle and KPCC film critics Claudia Puig and Lael Loewenstein review this weekend’s new movie releases in theaters, streaming and on demand platforms — in three minutes or less!

Will Smith stands left of frame. He seems to be in a logged shelter, leaning up against horizontally laid beams with laregr gaps in between exposing the view outside. Its dark with everything having a gray, muted tone as if night time. A subtle golden light illuminates Smith's face, but the source of the light cannot be seen. Smith looks off to his right, his eyes hooded under his brows. He wears a gray button up that looks stiff and stained with dirt and sweat. Just outside the shelter, right behind Smith to his right is Ben Foster. He wears a large brimmed hat and military uniform, his image segmented by the gaps in the beams of the shelter. He looks just past Smith, as if not noticing him. Foster seems to be searching for something or someone.
