What’s The Worth Of Your California College Degree?

How much is your college degree worth? A new report from College Futures Foundation tried to get to the bottom of that question by comparing California colleges and how long it’d take certain graduates to recoup the money they put into the degree. The analysis focuses on low and moderate-income students. Eloy Ortiz Oakley, president and CEO of College Futures Foundation, joins to share the main takeaways and what we can learn from this. We also want to know: do you think your degree was worth it? Was it a good investment? Why or why not? Call us at 866-893-5722 or email atcomments@laist.com.

Some Children Recall Past Lives. Are They Imagined Or Real?

Some Children Recall Past Lives. Are They Imagined Or Real

There is a database of roughly 2,200 cases of children in the U.S. who have recalled past lives. Among those cases, roughly two thirds include a specific deceased person who researchers have verified as a “match” based on the child’s past life recollections. What is this phenomenon and how might our brains allow us to recall past lives? These are a few of the questions that Jim Tucker and his team at the Division for Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia are attempting to answer. This field of study, and those who study it, continue to face wide skepticism and flat out denial from colleagues and the public at large. Science hasn’t shown any clear evidence for why some children might be recalling past lives, but for the parents of children who recount unusual and surreal details of past lives, this phenomenon couldn’t be more real.

Joining us this morning on AirTalk is Jim Tucker, a professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia.

Pinkies Up! Let’s Talk Afternoon Tea

If Hollywood is any indication, LA is a coffee-drinking town — every lead actor, it seems, walks around holding an empty coffee cup for the cameras. But there's another side to our caffeinated ways: We love channeling our inner royal and enjoying the British tradition of a full afternoon tea service. That includes, but is not limited to, warm-from-the oven scones served with jam, lemon curd and clotted cream and those cute little finger sandwiches and pretty petit fours. Today on AirTalk, we celebrate Food Friday with afternoon tea. Joining Austin is Wendy Chen, co-owner of Callisto Tea House in Pasadena.

Feature: ‘The Blues Brothers’ Book Brings Together What Made The 1980 Film A Classic

Saturday Night Live over the decades has served as a building block for comedians, using that platform as a way to get your name out there and eventually spin their popularity into other ventures. One of the earliest, and most iconic cases, being the American Classic that SNL alums Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi created with “The Blues Brothers.” A new book, by writer and journalist Daniel de Visé, gets into how Aykroyd and Belushi’s kinetic, comedic energy was spun into a just as entertaining production process. Along with the film’s influence on pop culture humor, it also shares how the film’s appreciation of blues music is best encapsulated by its soundtrack and appearances by Aretha Franklin and James Brown.

For this week’s FilmWeek feature, we talk to Daniel de Visé, author of “The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic” about what he was able to uncover from revisiting this film the captured a special moment in American film and comedy.
