WGA STRIKE ENDS 9.25.23

Screenwriters’ union leaders and Hollywood studios have reached a tentative agreement to end a historic strike after nearly five months, raising hopes that a crippling shutdown of film and television filming is near an end. Actors remain on strike, but movement on the writers’ demands could mean that the actors will find a resolution soon as well. The Writers Guild of America announced the deal Sunday in a joint statement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the group that represents studios, streaming services and production companies in negotiations. The agreement must be approved by the guild’s board and members before the strike officially ends, and that could happen this week.

AirTalk reached out to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers for comment, but we have not received a response.

A group of nine California lawmakers have made a push to get former President Donald Trump off the ballot after he incited an insurrection on January 6, 2021. So what’s the likelihood of Trump actually coming off the ballot in not just California but other states that have ongoing cases?

Today on AirTalk, we break down this developing story with Dustin Gardiner, co-author of POLITICO's California Playbook.

Are Workplace Happy Hours And Off The Clock Socializing Things Of The Past?

END OF WORKPLACE HAPPY HOURS 9.25.23

It used to be fairly common to grab a drink with coworkers after clocking out for the day, but after-work socializing might be a thing of the past. According to a new Wall Street Journal piece, people are less interested in casual off-hours hang sessions. People want to close their laptop and leave work in the rearview for the rest of the day. Can we blame ‘em? The pandemic resulted in a shift in priorities for a lot of people. But is this shift here to stay or a workplace trend that could bounce back? Joining to discuss is Massella Dukuly, head of Workplace Strategy and Innovation at Charter, a future-of-work media and research company. We need to hear your thoughts on this! Have you changed your behavior around socializing after work hours? Call 866-893-5722 or email atcomments@laist.com.

The Importance Of The Spanish Language To The Latino Identity

LATINOS SPANISH LANGUAGE IMPORTANCE 9.25.23

Language can be an important aspect of one's culture and identity. It signifies where someone is from and allows newer generations to communicate with past ones. But, language is often the first thing lost as groups emigrate and subsequent generations become further removed from the previous. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, 24 percent of Latino adults in the United States do not speak Spanish well enough to carry on a conversation. That percentage grows to almost 65 percent when third and higher generations are abstracted. Although a majority of Latinos agree that speaking Spanish is not integral to the Latino identity, more than half of non-Spanish speaking Latinos report experiences of being shamed by others because of their lack of fluency. The Spanish language remains an important cultural expression for some Latino subgroups, mainly immigrant Latinos, with 42 percent believing it is important that future generations of Latinos in the U.S. speak Spanish.

Joining us today on AirTalk to discuss the report's findings is Mark Lopez, Director of Race and Ethnicity Research at Pew Research Center. We also want to hear from you! If you're a non-Spanish speaking Latino, what has your experience been like? Do you feel less connected to your Hispanic culture? What are people's reactions when you tell them you don't speak Spanish? You can call us at 866-893-5722 or you can email us at atcomments@laist.com.
