Weather Update: Flooding, Forecast, And How You Can Best Prepare

The first of two atmospheric rivers descended on Southern California on Thursday, bringing with it flooding and road closures. Long Beach and the Palos Verdes Peninsula were the hardest hit spots. Palos Verdes Drive South was shut down by mud that's since been cleared. A flood watch remained in place through Friday morning for Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, even as sustained rain turned to intermittent showers and occasional thunderstorms. Friday, however, should be decently clear and sunny, creating the perfect opportunity to get sandbags ready for the next storm, which arrives Saturday night. And experts saying it's expected to be a big one, with the National Weather Service warning of potentially "life-threatening impacts." Joining this morning on AirTalk is Ariel Cohen, meteorologist in charge, National Weather Service Oxnard.

January Saw Jobs Increase By More Than 300,000— What Sectors Of The Economy Will Be Positively Impacted

The nation’s employers delivered a stunning burst of hiring to begin 2024, adding 353,000 jobs in January in the latest sign of the economy’s continuing ability to shrug off the highest interest rates in two decades. Friday’s government report showed that last month’s job gain — roughly twice what economists had predicted — topped the December gain of 333,000, a figure that was itself revised sharply higher. The unemployment rate stayed at 3.7%, just above a half-century low. Today on AirTalk, we’ll get into this recent report and what it forecasts for the economy in the short-term with William Lee, chief economist of the Milken Institute.

A Couple Pros Train Their Vision On Apple’s Vision Pro

If you’ve got a spare $3500 floating around, Apple has an idea of where you can spend it. Out today is the Apple Vision Pro. They’re referring to it as a “spatial computer,” but to us normal folks it looks like a headset, one with a screen that allows you to control apps with your eyes, watch movies immersively, and make Facetime calls as your computer-generated “persona.” There’s been a lot of noise around this thing. So: is it worth the hype? We’re going to talk to someone who’s tested it extensively. And, now that this kind of tech is here, we’re going to get into how–and when–it should be used. Joining us to discuss is Lance Ulanoff, US editor in chief of TechRadar and Jeremy Bailenson, professor of communication at Stanford, where he’s the founding director of the Virtual Human Interaction Lab.

Among the semifinalists for Best New Restaurant is the recently-opened Portuguese restaurant and wine bar Barra Santos, which comes to the Cypress Park neighborhood from Last Word Hospitality, the group behind places like Found Oyster in East Hollywood, Queen St. in Eagle Rock and Nossa Caipirinha Bar in Los Feliz.

Today on AirTalk, we’re joined by Barra Santos Owner Mike Santos and Head Chef Melissa Lopez to talk about the recent honor, and how they worked together to capture the feeling and flavors of Santos’ native Portugal in this small but mighty new Cypress Park hangout.

Wim Wenders' new film PERFECT DAYS is nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year’s 96th Academy Awards — the first Japanese Oscar submission not directed by a Japanese filmmaker. The film follows Hirayama, a toilet cleaner with a passion for music, books, and a fondness for photographing trees. Despite his structured life, his past is gradually revealed through a series of unexpected encounters. Today, Larry sits down with the director to talk about the project and his filmmaking process.
