National Guard deployment deemed unlawful, challenges to US Attorney Essayli's position

President Donald Trump’s administration violated federal law by sending National Guard troops to Southern California during immigration enforcement operations and accompanying protests, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco did not require the remaining troops to be withdrawn, however. He set his order to go into effect on Friday. In other legal news, the Los Angeles Times reported that the federal public defender’s office has sought to disqualify local U.S. attorney Bill Essayli from his position, unless confirmed by the United States Senate or federal judges. Joining us to help round up this latest legal news is Kyle Cheney, senior legal affairs reporter for Politico, and Laurie Levenson, professor of criminal law at Loyola Law School and former federal prosecutor.

Triple Play: Checking in a postseason heads into its last month

Fans of baseball, the end is nigh — for this season at least. We’re about to head into the fall months and the baseball postseason that comes with it. The Dodgers have been, according to our expert newsroom analysis, “pretty good.” But will they be able to carry this decent momentum into the coming weeks? Our triple play is reuniting for a check-in on the Dodgers’ record, standings, and all things baseball as we head into the last month of the postseason. Joining us for the conversation is Nick Roman, former host of LAist’s All Things Considered and host of Roman on the Radio, a podcast about public radio and A Martinez, host of NPR’s “Morning Edition.”

Nevermind AI. A new book says you are smarter than you know.

Let’s face it. Some people are blessed with extraordinary mental gifts. Maya Angelou, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Nikola Tesla. Those people, with their unique forms of human intelligence, are not us…right? In 2021, researchers at Ohio State’s Project Narrative uncovered what they call primal intelligence, a form of human brilliance that computers could never replicate but individual humans could strengthen. Now, a new book offers insights into how you can unlock your next level of intelligence. Your primal intelligence. Joining us today on AirTalk to discuss is Angus Fletcher, author of Primal Intelligence: You Are Smarter Than You Know and professor of story science at Ohio State’s Project Narrative.

How are tariffs hitting local importers and immigrant communities?

How are tariffs hitting local importers and immigrant communities?

President Trump's tariff strategy can be easy to lose track of, as his administration announces new tariffs just as quickly as they pause others. Here in SoCal, immigrant-owned businesses are on the frontlines of the latest tariff hikes as markets in Artesia’s Little India, Thai Restaurants in Westminster, and Taiwanese Pastry shops in Monterey Park feel the “day by day” effect of these tariffs on the shelves they stock. These effects are reshaping the local economy and call into question whether tariffs are achieving their stated goal of boosting U.S. jobs and manufacturing. Joining us on AirTalk today for more is Adam S. Hersh, senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, and Ching Fu, Meet Fresh General Manager. We also want to hear from you! If you own a restaurant or specialty grocery store, what impacts are you seeing? Are you having trouble getting the products you need for your business? And if you are a customer, have you seen any effects of the tariffs on either pricing or stock? Give us a call at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

What's a show or movie that got your job 100% right (or wrong)?

"Realistic" television has had a good bout lately. Shows like The Bear and The Pitt have been praised by workers in the restaurant and medical fields respectively for having accurate portrayals of their careers. But as anyone who has watched an episode of General Hospital knows, not every show feels the need to show a realistic version of its setting. So today on AirTalk, we're turning the mic over to you, the listener! What's the best media depiction of your job that you've seen? Maybe it got the day-to-day motions spot-on, or got the overall vibe down perfectly. And hey, if you've seen a downright terrible version of yourself on the screen, tell us about that too! What was it about the show or movie or game or book that just completely misunderstood what your job is all about? Give us a call at 866-893-5722 or you can email us at atcomments@laist.com.
