The possible long-term effects the LA fires may have on the county’s housing crisis

Today on AirTalk, we're talking about the fire's possible long term effects on housing in L.A. Many beloved restaurants burnt down in the fires, and the ones that are still standing are doing their part to continue serving their community. We're talking about the special place that these restaurants have in our hearts and where you can get free meals if you have been affected by the fires. In the wake of all the devastation, we want to hear from our listeners about why they love L.A. and what makes the city unlike any other.

A single story home up in flames.

Over the course of about two weeks, between the Palisades and Eaton fires, around 12,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed, many of them homes. In the Palisades alone, over 400 houses are estimated to be lost, with numbers up in the thousands for Altadena. But, even before these fires, Los Angeles was suffering from a housing shortage. Over 75,000 people in LA County are unhoused. Now, as residents in the Palisades and Altadena struggle to find places to live amidst evacuations and razed homes, the effects on LA’s housing market can already be felt. Today on AirTalk, we discuss how the recent fires are impacting LA’s housing crisis with Marisa Kendall, homelessness reporter for CalMatters, and what we can expect for long-term economic fallout with Brock Smith, associate director of research at Milken Institute.

How restaurants are doing in the immediate wake of LA’s fires

Among the many structures destroyed and damaged in the fires were some of LA’s most beloved restaurants. From Malibu’s Moonshadows to Altadena’s Fox’s, staples of the community were lost. But amongst the restaurants destroyed, are also those that have become beacons of hope, providing free meals for those affected by the fires. Today on AirTalk, we talk to LAist associate editor of Food and Culture, Gab Chabrán, about how the recent fires have changed LA’s dining landscape.

You can read more about the restaurants that burned down and the ones that are helping out at LAist.
