Summer Heat Is On The Way, Update On The FLiRT Variant, And SoCal's Mexican Cuisine

Summer is here and the heat is on its way. After months of May gray and June gloom, you might be ready for some warmer weather. But meteorologists are warning of a ‘heat dome’ by mid-week, producing temperatures that could break records and cause wildfires. The most impacted areas will be Northern California and the Sierra foothills, but Los Angeles will see a big jump in temperature as well. What’s causing it? Experts say El Nino and El Nina climate cycles. With warming temperatures also comes the threat of mosquitoes. LA County just reported its first case of West Nile virus. Joining us today to discuss the ‘heat dome’ and the mosquito threat is Robbie Munroe, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, and Susanne Kluh, General Manager for the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District.

LA City Councilmembers Choose Marqueece Harris-Dawson As Their Next President

The Los Angeles City Council has chosen its next president — and city hall observers say the decision represents another step left in an ongoing progressive shift within local politics. Fourteen members voted Tuesday to elect Marqueece Harris-Dawson as the council’s next leader. The body’s 15th member, Monica Rodriguez, was absent. Harris-Dawson will assume the role on Sept. 20, when current council President Paul Krekorian is set to step aside. Harris-Dawson has represented the 8th district in South L.A. since 2015. He was nominated for council president last week by seven council members, including those in the council’s progressive wing.

Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum Makes History With Presidential Win

Claudia Sheinbaum claimed victory in Mexico’s presidential election, becoming the first woman selected for the job by promising to continue the political course set by her populist predecessor despite widespread discontent with persistent cartel violence and disappointing economic performance.

The climate scientist and former Mexico City mayor was the favored successor of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. But her cool temper offers a sharp contrast in style — and a break with Mexico’s male-dominated political culture. Joining us to unpack the historic win and look at what Mexicans and the world may expect under her leadership is Eyder Peralta, NPR International Correspondent in Mexico City, Mexico.

Exploring The History Of Southern California’s Mexican Cuisine

Southern California has no shortage of incredible Mexican food. There is even a term for the style of Mexican cuisine served in many of the restaurants in SoCal, it’s California Mexican, or Cal-Mex for short. The culinary trend we’ve come to know and love in Los Angeles and beyond consists of dishes like cheesy enchiladas, crispy tacos, sizzling fajita platters and combination plates. But Mexican food in this region did not start out this way. Mexican cuisine in California has evolved over the years to appeal to the American palate and take advantage of seasonal ingredients in the region. Joining us to discuss the history of Mexican food in Southern California is Gustavo Arellano, columnist for the Los Angeles Times and author of ‘Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.’
