SoCal listeners share their thoughts on the first American Pope

Yesterday, just as AirTalk hit the airwaves, white smoke fluttered out above the Sistine Chapel and signalled to the world that a new pope had been elected. After around an hour of anticipation, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost emerged onto a high balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square and was announced as Pope Leo XIV. While the new leader of the Catholic Church has an impressive resume, with a decades-long resume including playing a pivotal role for the church in Peru during instability in the country, one key facet of Leo stood out to many: his American Roots. The Chicago born Pope is the first ever to hail from the US. Today on AirTalk, Austin Cross speaks with Raúl E. Zegarra, Assistant Professor of Roman Catholic Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School and Father Ramon Reyes, associate pastor at Incarnation Church in Glendale, about the new pope, his American heritage, and where the church goes from here. We also want to hear from you! If you’re a Catholic listener, what are you hoping out of Pope Leo XIV? What do you think about the Pope’s Chicago origins? Aging Series: How our relationships with our mothers changes as we (and they) age

If you’ve been listening to AirTalk this week, you may have heard a conversation or two on aging – the physiology of aging, the economics of aging, and even the terminology we use to refer to older folks. Listeners had a lot of opinions on that – from “elder” to “seasoned individual.” Today, as part of this week-long series on aging and in honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday, we’re talking about how our relationships with our mothers change as we age. We want to hear from you. How has your relationship with your mom changed as both you and her age? What are new challenges? What is easier? Call us at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com. Joining us for the conversation is Terri Apter, psychologist and author of Altered Loves: Mothers and Daughters During Adolescence. Her most recent book is called Grandparenting: On Love and Relationships Across Generations.

Food Friday BBQ Series: Moo's Craft Barbecue

Los Angeles has solidified itself as a top BBQ destination. And for the whole month of May, we are dedicating our Food Friday segment to showcasing the best BBQ SoCal has to offer. One of the restaurants to help put LA BBQ on the map (and the Michelin Guide) is Moo's Craft Barbecue located in Lincoln Heights. The husband-and-wife-run restaurant first started as a pop-up, and later became a 2023 James Beard award semifinalist for Best Chef California. Today, we're joined by Andrew and Michelle Muñoz, co-owners of Moo's Craft Barbecue, where they specialize in their own blend of Texas-Cali BBQ.

Feature: New report details the losses California animation is facing due to outsourcing

Animation has been a major player in Hollywood, with companies like DreamWorks and Disney having made some of their most acclaimed works here in the Golden State. However, a new report has found that recent high-grossing animated films are being made outside of Hollywood. Examples mentioned include Moana, with the original film being made in Hollywood, but its sequel having been made in Vancouver. The study was co-authored by the Animation Guild, BRIC Foundation and Titmouse Foundation in partnership with CVL Economics.

Today on FilmWeek, we’re joined by CVL Economics founding partner Adam Fowler, the Animation Guild executive board member Jason Mayer, and LAist chief animation critic Charles Solomon.
