Rosalynn Carter, Champion For Mental Health, Dies At 96

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Jimmy Carter during his one term as U.S. president and their four decades thereafter as global humanitarians, has died at the age of 96.

The Carter Center said she died Sunday after living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. The statement said she “died peacefully, with family by her side” at 2:10 p.m. at her rural Georgia home of Plains. She was a long-time champion for Americans living with mental illness. She joined Larry on AirTalk in 2010 to talk about her book “Within Our Reach: Ending the Mental Health Crisis” (Rodale Books, 2010).

Microsoft Hires Sam Altman Days After OpenAI Ousts Him As CEO

Microsoft snapped up Sam Altman and another architect of OpenAI for a new venture after their sudden departures shocked the artificial intelligence world, leaving the newly installed CEO of the ChatGPT maker to paper over tensions by vowing to investigate Altman’s firing. The developments Monday come after a weekend of drama and speculation about how the power dynamics would shake out at OpenAI, whose chatbot kicked off the generative AI era by producing human-like text, images, video and music. It ended with former Twitch leader Emmett Shear taking over as OpenAI’s interim chief executive and Microsoft announcing it was hiring Altman and OpenAI co-founder and former President Greg Brockman to lead Microsoft’s new advanced AI research team. OpenAI said Friday that Altman was pushed out after a review found he was “not consistently candid in his communications” with the board of directors, which had lost confidence in his ability to lead the company. Joining us today is Paresh Dave, senior writer for WIRED.

Schools Are Banning Cellphones In Classrooms. How Far Will Enforcement Go?

Schools Are Banning Cellphones In Classrooms. How Far Will Enforcement Go?

States are cracking down on the use of cellphones in classrooms. Last May, Florida passed a law that now requires public schools to ban cellphone use during class time. Proponents say it prevents students from scrolling through their phones all day and creating potentially harmful social media content. Critics say that the ban will increase surveillance of students and hamper important communication between them and their parents. Schools in other states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania and even California have addressed the issue as well. In 2019, Assembly Bill 272 signed into law by Gov. Newsom, allows (but does not require) a school board to adopt a policy to limit the use of smartphones by students while they are at school. Joining us today on AirTalk to discuss the push to ban cellphones in schools is New York Times reporter covering technology and education, Natasha Singer.

Pastrami On Rye With A Side Of Sunshine: LA’s Best Delis

“The hot pastrami sandwich served at Langer’s Delicatessen in downtown Los Angeles is the finest hot pastrami sandwich in the world.” So wrote Nora Ephron in 2002. Ephron isn’t alone in praising Los Angeles’s deli scene. David Sax, author of Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye, and the Heart of Jewish Delicatessen, writes that “Los Angeles has become America’s premier deli city...Across the city’s sprawling acres, there are more delicatessens of a higher quality, on average, than anywhere else in America.” Today on AirTalk, we’re celebrating the delis of Southern California, and we want to hear from you! Call us with your best spots for pastrami on rye at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com. Joining us to break down what makes a deli great is Shannon Sarna, editor at large for The Nosher, a Jewish Food Website and author of Modern Jewish Comfort Food and Modern Jewish Baker.
