Proposed Legislation Would Require Speed-Limiting Devices In New CA Vehicles. Thoughts

State Sen. Scott Wiener has introduced a package of legislation aimed at curbing speeding and reducing traffic-related deaths. The measure includes requiring nearly all new vehicles to have devices that would limit speeding to 10 miles per hour above the posted limit. Reports say emergency vehicles would be spared. Today on AirTalk, we take it to the listeners? What are your thoughts on a measure like this? Valid solution to reckless driving? Or do the consequences outweigh the potential payoffs? Remembering Filmmaker And Three-Time Oscar Nominee Norman Jewison

Norman Jewison, the acclaimed and versatile Canadian-born director whose Hollywood films ranged from Doris Day comedies and “Moonstruck” to such social dramas as the Oscar-winning "In the Heat of the Night," has died at age 97. Jewison, a three-time Oscar nominee who in 1999 received an Academy Award for lifetime achievement, died “peacefully” Saturday, according to publicist Jeff Sanderson. Additional details were not immediately available. Throughout his long career, Jewison combined light entertainment with topical films that appealed to him on a deeply personal level. He received three individual Oscar nominations for Best Director for "In the Heat of the Night," which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture in 1967, as well as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Moonstruck." His other notable films included the Cold War spoof “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming,” the Steve McQueen thriller “The Thomas Crown Affair” and a pair of movies featuring Denzel Washington: the racial drama “A Soldier’s Story” and “The Hurricane.” Today on AirTalk, we'll talk with Ira Wells, the author of Jewison's biography "Norman Jewison: A Director's Life."

Consider The Robot: A Look At The State Of Automation

A recent piece in the Wall Street Journal by Nora Eckert notes that automakers are going all-in on automation as a way to fight rising labor costs. But it’s not as simple as just swapping out humans with robots. For one, there are tasks that robots simply can’t do. And investing in machinery means that companies inherently have less flexibility in their processes, potentially hindering them in a market that requires nimbleness. Additionally, maintaining incredibly complex machinery in good working order is expensive and time-consuming. Even facing these obstacles, some industries have made inroads in automation. Where are the robots gaining a foothold? And what does it look like when automation is introduced into a workplace? Joining us to discuss are David Greenfield, editor in chief of Automation World and Ben Armstrong, executive director and a research scientist at MIT’s Industrial Performance Center, where he coleads the Work of the Future initiative.
