What Does Bringing The Woolly Mammoth Back From Extinction Mean For The Future Of Animal Conservation?
Since the discovery of a well-preserved woolly mammoth carcass in 2013, many scientists have been eager to find ways to bring the extinct animal back to life through some type of cloning process.
Researchers have explored ways to reconstruct the specimen using its nearest living relative as a means to fill in the gaps. But the work is expensive - and that’s where the company Colossal has stepped in, providing $15 million in private funding for the effort.
However, there are also questions about whether bringing these beasts back to life would be worth the cost, in terms of the impact on other species and the need to maintain habitats being affected by the climate crisis. Today on AirTalk, Larry sits down with Beth Shapiro, UC Santa Cruz professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology to discuss how woolly mammoths could be brought back to life, why scientists want to do it, and the potential ramifications.
Next Time You Enjoy a Night Out in L.A. County, You’ll Likely Need Your Covid-19 Vaccine Card
Los Angeles County is gearing up to require proof of vaccination against Covid-19 for employees and customers at bars, wineries, breweries, nightclubs, and lounges.
The new requirement will take effect in October, when a revised health officer order kicks in. That order is expected to come out this week. You’ll need to have at least one dose by Oct. 7, and the second dose by Nov. 4. Beginning Oct. 7, full vaccinations or a recent negative Covid-19 test will also be required for people attending or working at outdoor “mega events” with more than 10,000 people.

Employees Seeking Exemptions To The Vaccine Are Increasingly Citing Religion. But Is There A Religious Or Legal Basis?
An estimated 2,600 Los Angeles Police Department employees are citing religious objections to try to get out of the city’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement.
Religious objections, once used sparingly around the country to get exempted from various required vaccines, are becoming a much more widely used loophole against the COVID-19 shot.
And it is only likely to grow following President Joe Biden’s sweeping new vaccine mandates covering more than 100 million Americans, including executive branch employees and workers at businesses with more than 100 people on the payroll.
