Newsom pledges additional EV state tax rebates if Trump eliminates federal rebates

California could offer state tax rebates for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration eliminates the federal EV tax credit, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday. Newsom will propose creating a new version of the state’s successful Clean Vehicle Rebate Program, which was phased out in 2023 after funding 594,000 cars and saving 456 million gallons of fuel, Newsom’s office said in a statement. Money for the new rebate system “could come from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which is funded by polluters under the state’s cap-and-trade program,” according to the statement. Today on AirTalk, we discuss the implications that'll have for current and future EV drivers in the state; joining the program to discuss this is Gil Tal, professor of Environmental Science and Policy and the director of the EV Research Center at UC Davis.

Has reading become less quantitative in the classroom?

Has reading become less quantitative in the classroom?

Longstanding traditions have required some adapting in education, with fields like English needing to come to grips, and students’ reading capacity is difficult to measure due to issues like pandemic learning loss. Should the typical syllabi require summer reading, or multiple books over the course of a semester, if students aren’t going to learn during the entire process? This concept is one that adjunct writing lecturer at Southern Methodist University Jonathan Malesic came to terms within a New York Times guest essay titled There’s a Very Good Reason College Students Don’t Read Anymore. In his piece, Malesic prescribes the issue as systemic, stemming from prized jobs in today’s workforce, like finance jobs and internet influencers, awarding results and deprioritizing the process of reaching said results. Today on AirTalk, we’re joined by Malesic and hear from listeners about why quantity has become a difficult measure in education, for English teachers and other departments.

SoCal history: How one of the largest ports in the world was built on shaky waters

The port of Los Angeles is the busiest container port in North America. Just last month alone, the port handled over 900,000 cargo containers. Containers full of cargo as big as refrigerators or as small as Barbie dolls. It is a gateway to the Pacific and an integral part of the nation's economy. Yet, despite the L.A. port's significance, the land and circumstances on which it was built were muddy and foundations of sand. In his book A Machine to Move Ocean and Earth: The Making of the Port of Los Angeles--and America (W. W. Norton & Company, 2024), author and historian James Tejani, chronicles the history of the United States' largest port, exploring the different hands that made its seemingly impossible construction possible. Today on AirTalk, James Tejani joins us to discuss the untold story of the Port of Los Angeles and the technological marvel it is that it still stands today.
