New study attributes additional deaths to the Eaton and Palisades fires
At least 31 people are confirmed dead from this year’s Palisades and Eaton fires, which quickly spread through Southern California and destroyed more than 16,000 structures. But a new study released this week says more than 400 additional deaths can be attributed to the fires. The study’s authors calculated how many deaths were expected during a few-week period at the beginning of the year, and compared that number to how many deaths were actually recorded. These “excess deaths,” according to the study, are attributable to exposure to the fires, and the authors argue that this number is probably on the conservative side. Today on AirTalk, we speak with one of the authors of the study, Andrew C. Stokes, a demographer and associate professor at Boston University.

Korean-inspired pastries with Modu Cafe
Many of us tried our hands at baking for the first time during the pandemic. And while most of us weren’t hooked beyond these first steps, for Jiyoon Jang, chef and owner of Modu Cafe, baking quickly became an obsession. After leaving behind a career in sports and moving to Los Angeles, Jang dove headfirst into the world of baking and food photography — growing a social media audience and selling pastries that highlighted Korean flavors and ingredients out of her apartment. Last October, after years of pop-ups, she opened her popular brick-and-mortar cafe in Highland Park. Today on AirTalk, we sit down with the chef and owner of Modu Cafe, Jiyoon Jang, to talk about her journey into baking and her Korean-inspired pastries.
