LAUSD test scores improve again, exceeding pre-pandemic performance. Here’s what parents should know

Today on AirTalk, LAUSD test scores improve; telling others about your health issues; unlikely non-resturant places for the best eats in So-Cal, and FilmWeek.

A diverse group of young children sit on a colorful mat inside a classroom. One child sits on a small green chair next to an adult woman with light skin. In the background there are two men sitting on stools. The man on the left has dark skin. His arms are raised, as in a cheer. The man on the right has light brown skin and is clapping.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction (back left stool) and LAUSD superintendent Alberto Carvalho visit Van Deene Avenue Elementary School.

The 2024-2025 California standardized test scores show students continue to make academic gains following the pandemic school shutdowns. While the Los Angeles Unified School District’s scores are slightly lower than the statewide average, they’ve improved more rapidly compared to before the pandemic. “We have never seen the rate of improvement outpacing the state the way we're seeing,” Carvalho said in a press briefing on Wednesday. “But we certainly have never been in a position where we caught up to a pre-pandemic level and exceeded it.” The district’s scores show improvements at every grade level between this year and the prior year, and when compared to before the pandemic. Joining us for the conversation is Morgan Polikoff, associate professor at the USC Rossier School of Education.

When dealing with health issues, how do you decide what to share and when?

Dolly Parton took to social media yesterday to assure her fans that she "ain't dead yet.” The post came amid swirling rumors and speculation about her health. Late last month, Parton postponed her first Las Vegas residency in 32 years, citing “health challenges.” In her post, Parton didn’t disclose any details about what kinds of health issues she’s facing. Of course, health matters are incredibly personal, and many choose to keep that information private. Today on AirTalk, we want to hear from you. How do you tell people about your medical conditions? If you are dealing with a new health issue or maybe something chronic, how do you choose when to tell people? And how much do you choose to share? Call us at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

Unlikely non-restaurant places for the best eats in So-Cal

Sometimes the best places to catch a great bite are well outside the usual suspects — to the point where the eats aren’t even from an actual eatery. Whether it’s the fried chicken of a concert venue, that irresistible burrito from a hospital, an authentic kabab from a Persian market, or the guacamole being churned out by the caseload from your “local” health food store. However, you wound up finding your favorite non-restaurant eatery, we on the AirTalk team want to hear about it! Joining us is Luca Servodio, host of the LA food podcast. Give us a call at 866-893-5722 or you can email us at atcomments@laist.com and share with us your favorite foods from unlikely spots.
