What To Know For Mosquito Awareness Week 2024
This week is California’s Mosquito Awareness Week, a fitting time considering that California is now starting to move into the spring. With that transition from rainy to sunny, those puddles of loose water you’ll find around your home become a breeding ground for mosquitoes…literally. So to avoid the chance of those pesky bug bites, or even contracting a virus, it’s best to keep places dry and prepare through other means. So what are the best ways to protect yourself? And in what ways are advancements in science helping fight that battle?
Joining us today are Susanne Kluh, General Manager for the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District, and Omar Akbari, professor of cell and developmental biology at UC San Diego.
The News Out Of CinemaCon 2024
At CinemaCon, Hollywood studios, exhibitors and tech companies come together to preview what’s next in moviegoing, from the films that they hope will get audiences to the theaters to the latest and greatest in snacks, seating and projection. On stage, the message is (by design) optimistic about the future of cinemas and the industry’s capacity for evolution. Whether it’s streaming, piracy, VHS or television, the leaders in the filmed entertainment industry are always quick to remind that their business has survived its share of existential crises: Someone is always forecasting its demise. Studios including Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Paramount, Disney and Lionsgate all took to the big stage at Caesar’s Palace to show new trailers or footage from their biggest upcoming films, from “Furiosa” to “Deadpool & Wolverine,” sometimes with the help of movie stars, to stoke excitement in the people who will put these films in their theaters. Joining us to recap CinemaCon 2024 is Richard Rushfield, columnist for The Ankler.

Revisiting Some Of Orange County’s Beloved But Lost Landmarks
When most people think of major attractions in Orange County, places like Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and the gorgeous coastline and beaches in places like Manhattan Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. But as historian and writer Chris Epting explains in his new book “Lost Landmarks of Orange County,” the OC’s reputation as a tourist destination might not be the same were it not for attractions like the California Alligator Farm, Lion Country Safari and the Orange County International Raceway, which helped establish the area as a tourist destination.
Today on AirTalk, Chris Epting joins Larry Mantle to talk about his new book.
Google To Limit Access To CA News Sites
Google announced it would start removing links to California news sites on Monday as a “testing process” as legislation aimed at protecting local journalism looms. If enacted, The California Journalism Preservation Act would require companies like Google to pay a fee to online publishers. Advocates of the bill say companies like Meta and Google make billions in revenue off this content and forcing them to compensate gives struggling local publishers a fighting chance. Google officials say it would “result in significant changes to the services we can offer Californians and the traffic we can provide to California publishers.” Joining to discuss is POLITICO California political reporter Jeremy B. White and Brittney Barsotti, general counsel for the California News Publishers Association.
Airplane Etiquette: To Swap Seats Or Not?
You’ve boarded the plane, settled into your aisle seat, and are looking forward to an uneventful flight of microwaved meals and cheap wine. Everything’s going swimmingly until you get the dreaded question: “Would you mind swapping seats with me?” Sometimes it’s a couple who can’t bear to be apart for 90 minutes, sometimes it’s a parent wanting to sit next to their young child. For whatever reason, they were unable to take care of the issue before boarding, so now it’s your problem. To switch or not to switch? What’s the best way to say no? Today on AirTalk, we talk it through, and we want to hear from you: give us a call at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com. Joining us to adjudicate is Lara Ketterman, flight attendant for one of the big three airlines and co-host of the airline employee and aviation podcast Non-Rev Lounge.
