Airlines and Air Travel 10.12.21

Southwest Airlines is experiencing continued widespread cancelations and delays following a weekend of major disruptions. According to CBS News, more than 2,000 Southwest flights have been cancelled since late last week.

The widespread disruptions began shortly after the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, representing 9,000 pilots, asked a federal court on Friday to block the airline’s order that all employees get vaccinated. The union argued that Southwest must negotiate over the issue because it could involve sick leave or disability if pilots have a reaction to the vaccine. Southwest’s CEO said Tuesday he doesn’t believe businesses should implement COVID-19 vaccine mandates, but the company is attempting to adhere to federal regulations. Today on AirTalk, we talk with Leslie Josephs, reporter covering the airline industry for CNBC, and Ron Reeves, operations and maintenance bureau manager for Long Beach Airport about the latest with Southwest and air travel.

According to reporting from Vice’s Motherboard, until now, the industry has been exempt from safety protocols. Although the safety standards are voluntary, some experts believe it’s a huge step toward legitimizing a taboo sector that can sometimes send clients to the hospital. Today on AirTalk, we talk with Samantha Cole, senior staff writer at Motherboard and Hallie Lieberman, author of “Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy,” about what the new standards mean for companies, customers and the industry as a whole.
