Election Day check-in: redistricting and Prop 50
It’s election day! This Tuesday will see voters go to the polls across California, voting on a redistricting proposition that had big names supporting and opposing it. Proposition 50 will finally come closer to either passing or failing, with polling seemingly favoring the Democrat-supported ballot proposal. Although California’s redistricting has dominated much of the conversation, alongside Texas, many other states are considering similarly politicized changes as we get closer to the midterms. So, where does redistricting stand across all 50 states? Today on AirTalk, we’ll talk to Frank Stoltze about California’s outlook, Ron Elving, senior editor and correspondent on the Washington Desk for NPR News, to get a broader picture on redistricting nationwide and Libby Rainey, LAist reporter, visiting vote centers
Why is Gen Z bringing back the early 2000s?
Everything comes back around eventually. For the last few years, Gen Z has become nostalgic for the 90s and early 2000s, and even more recently, the 2010s. Baggy jeans are back, today’s pop stars are clear Brittany Spears rip-offs, and television shows like The Office are getting online revivals. But why are Gen Z yearning for a time most do not have their own memories of? And why are they nostalgic for only ten years ago? Today on AirTalk, we discuss why Gen Z is finding solace in the past, and what trends they have brought back in full force giving us all deja vu. We’re joined by Clay Routledge, psychologist and author of the book How Nostalgia Can Help You Live a More Meaningful Life, and Kate Lindsay, culture writer and co-host of Slate’s ICYMI “In Case You Missed It” podcast about internet culture.
Rose Bowl, Pasadena file a lawsuit against UCLA — here’s what we know
Last week, the Rose Bowl Operating Committee and Pasadena filed a lawsuit against UCLA, as well University of California Regents, for preliminary discussions the school had with SoFi Stadium, potentially relocating its games. Though UCLA stated it did not violate its agreement with the Rose Bowl, this legal case does leave questions about what the future of this longstanding relationship will look like. Joining us to discuss this lawsuit is Victor Gordo, mayor of the city of Pasadena.
We weren’t able to have a UCLA representative join the program, but LAist did receive a statement on the lawsuit: “While we continue to evaluate the long-term arrangement for UCLA Football home games, no decision has been made.”
AI now develops drugs faster than humans. Is that a good thing?
The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence in every sector has played a significant role in transforming the way industries streamline their operations. In healthcare, this transformation has enhanced the capabilities of clinicians and scientists to expedite patient care in a cost-effective and efficient way. Many healthcare professionals, however, remain skeptical as this new technology poses ethical challenges around privacy and accountability. But these concerns have not stopped scientists from employing AI in their workflows, with the latest application being in drug discovery and development processes. Drug discovery — the process of identifying molecules and proteins to treat diseases — takes decades of time, billions of dollars, and delivers minimal success rates. Now, AI presents a new era for drug discovery, resulting in dramatic time and cost savings. Joining us on AirTalk to talk about AI’s potential in the advancement of drug discovery is Jo Varshney, CEO and founder of VeriSIM.
