GOP Recall Future 9.17.21

The recall election of Governor Gavin Newsom may be in the books, but for California’s Republican Party, it also marks the start of the countdown until next year’s regularly-scheduled gubernatorial election. Conservative radio host Larry Elder, who garnered the most votes of any of the candidates who ran to replace Newsom, says he has become a “political force” in the state and has no plans to leave the political stage. Meanwhile former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says he’ll take some time to talk to his family, confidants and supporters about his next steps, leaving the door open for another potential run down the road. But one of the takeaways from this recall election is that moderate Republicans in California, like Faulconer, struggled to gain traction among voters. And at the same time, a moderate Republican likely stands a much better chance of being elected in California than a populist Republican like Larry Elder. So, how does the party reconcile this issue in the nine months before the gubernatorial primary in June 2022?

Today on AirTalk, we dive into this with Marisa Lagos, political correspondent for KQED and co-host of the Political Breakdown podcast, and Jack Pitney, professor of American politics at Claremont McKenna College.

The film is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and is rated PG-13.
