Congresswoman Pelosi’s seat is in the air, here’s what to know and what listeners are saying
The last year has seen a Democratic Party working through an identity crisis, serving as the minority in every branch of the federal government. With the party and its voters searching for answers, it does leave questions about where the party’s ‘old guard’ will be open to change, even at the expense of their elected positions. One important domino in understanding this comes in California, with Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s seat potentially being up for grabs, as she hasn’t made a decision on her prospective reelection. Despite her not having an answer, it hasn’t stopped others from looking to unseat her— this includes progressive political advisor Saikat Chakrabarti and State Senator Scott Wiener— with both having some notable experience and also being relatively fresh faces to the state’s political machine. So what could potentially shake out in this race, and what will that tell us about the current state of the California Democratic Party? We’ll dig into this with Jeremy B. White , reporter covering California politics for Politico.
Triple Play: Dodgers try to become first repeat champion in quarter-century
The Dodgers and the Blue Jays go head to head tonight in Toronto for Game 1 of the World Series. Los Angeles is the first defending champion to reach the World Series since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies, who lost to the New York Yankees. No team has won consecutive titles since three in a row by the 1998-2000 Yankees, and no NL team has achieved the feat since Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine in 1975-76. Joining us to discuss is Nick Roman, host of Roman on the Radio; he’s also former host of All Things Considered on LAist and host of NPR’s Morning Edition A Martinez.
There’s already college sports — but now there’s a movement to make sports a college major
Should athletics be offered as a liberal arts major? Southern Virginia University thinks so. They’re offering a new major in simply – sports. Not sports performance, sports management, sports medicine. Just sports. Other colleges and universities are considering adding such a major too, though Southern Virginia University's is the first of its kind. Similar to music or theatre majors who get credit for performances, some feel that athletes should get credit for practices and competitions. Joining us today on AirTalk to discuss is Nell Gluckman, senior reporter at The Chronicle of Higher Education; her recent article is titled “Get Ready for the Sports Major.”
