Checking in with listeners displaced by the Eaton and Palisades Fires

Today on AirTalk, we're bringing you the latest on L.A. wildfire recovery and we'll hear from listeners who the fires have displaced about what they are facing now. For our SoCal History segment, we're diving into the most memorable moments in Academy Awards history. Wine industry experts share their thoughts on the decline in sales. Could it be attributed to Trump's tariffs or perhaps lessened interest in wine from younger generations? We're doing a roundup of everyone who has declared themselves candidates for the 2026 California gubernatorial race. What is their profession, which party do they align with, and what are their plans for office? Dating someone with kids, but don't want any of your own? We want to hear from listeners how they navigate dating and children.

SoCal History: Moments that have shaped the Academy Awards

The Academy Awards haven’t always been the television spectacular that we know today. Long before the red carpet, the massive Oscar campaigning, and, of course, the memorable speeches, the Academy Awards was a simple dinner banquet held in the Roosevelt Hotel. As the public became more invested in the awards ceremony through its broadcasting on radio and then eventually television in 1953, the Oscars have evolved into a global phenomenon that many argue has become a unique window into the industry’s reaction to social and cultural changes. From the emergence of New Hollywood cinema with Midnight Cowboy’s Best Picture win to #oscarssowhite; from Sacheen Littlefeather declining Marlon Brando’s award as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans to the slap heard around the world, the ceremony is marked by its cultural prominence. Today on AirTalk, we’re taking a look at the history and moments that have shaped the Academy Awards. Joining us to discuss is Michael Schulman, staff writer at the New Yorker and author of the book “Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears.” We also want to hear from you! What is one of your favorite acceptance speeches or moments from the Oscars? Give us a call at 866-983-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

The threat of tariffs and a decrease in alcohol consumption are plaguing California’s wine industry

California's wine industry has been in a downturn the last few years with compounding factors caused by pandemic supply chain issues and a decrease in alcohol consumption amongst younger generations. Most recently, the Trump administration’s threat of tariffs on Canada has caused a negative reaction with Canadian distributors pulling California wine from the shelves. With Canada being the number one export of California wine, this could have major effects for the industry. Today on AirTalk, we’re taking a look at the current challenges facing the state’s wine industry and how wineries are attempting to appeal to changing consumer preferences. Joining us are Jess Lander, wine reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Stuart Spencer, executive director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission and owner and winemaker at his family’s winery St. Amant, and Amelia Morán Ceja, Founder, President & CEO of Ceja Vineyards, a winery in Napa and Sonoma Valleys.

California will elect a new governor next year. Whose name is in the hat so far?

Next year, California will elect a new Governor to office. Governor Gavin Newsom, having served two consecutive terms, is not eligible for reelection leaving the field open. Who is tossing their name in the hat? Last week, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco announced his plan to run and while she hasn’t announced any plan to run, many speculate whether or not former Vice President Kamala Harris will run. Joining us this morning on AirTalk to talk about the race and what we know so far is Guy Marzorati, correspondent on KQED's California Politics and Government Desk, and Dan Walters, political columnist for CalMatters.

Unsure about kids? What happens when you date someone who has them?

It seems that now more than ever, young adults are understanding the role of childrearing as a choice, not a given. As a result, a growing number of Americans are opting to go child-free! But even if you don’t decide to have kids, what happens when you start dating someone who does? Does that mean you have to step into a role of parenthood that you didn’t sign up for? Today on AirTalk we’re talking about how to navigate dating someone who has kids. We want to hear from you! Are you dating someone with kids? Is that a dealbreaker for you? If not, how do you approach this setup? Do you talk to your partner about what role you should play in the child’s life? Call us at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.
