As LA Zoo Plans Controversial Expansion, We Discuss Potential Outcomes And Alternatives
Los Angeles Zoo officials, in an effort to increase its tourism attractions, are planning a $650-million expansion meant to maximize its underutilized and developed areas. The land it plans to use for its expanded operations is currently made up of native trees and endangered shrubs, which currently takes up 23 acres of land.
This has created some controversy, with environmental groups like Friends of Griffith Park voicing their concern about the expansion and supporting a reduced project alternative offered by the plan’s Environmental Impact Report. Today on AirTalk, Larry discusses the proposed plan by the LA Zoo with LA Times reporter Louis Sahagun and president of Friends of Griffith Park Gerry Hans.
On The 150th Anniversary of LA’s Chinatown Massacre, Calls For The City To Erect A Memorial To The History
One hundred and fifty years after racist attacks that killed 19 people in Los Angeles— at the time, 10 percent of the city’s Chinese population— advocates are hoping to commemorate the murders with a permanent memorial.
Today on AirTalk, we’re speaking with Michael Woo, former Los Angeles city councilmember (1985-1993) and co-chair of the steering committee to develop a permanent memorial to the 1871 massacre in L.A.’s Old Chinatown and Hao Huang, professor of music at Scripps College and host of the podcast “Blood on Gold Mountain” to learn more about the massacre and how advocates hope to see the city remember this history.
