As a government shutdown looms, we discuss budget proposals in Congress

Today on AirTalk, we're talking about the rejected Republican proposal that may lead to a government shutdown. What got us to this point and how might this affect you as the holidays commence? SFGATE released a regional map using reader feedback and Californians have a lot of opinions. Call in and tell us how you would separate the state into regions. For Food Friday, we have the co-owner of the 27th Street Bakery, Jeanette Bolden, here to share their famous sweet potato pie.

The photo is of the White House and it was taken from close by at an up-angle.
A possible government shutdown is on the horizon after President Elect Donald Trump rejected a three-month stopgap funding extension. The government will shut down this weekend if a bill is not passed by Friday.

As a government shutdown looms, we discuss budget proposals in Congress

A day before a potential government shutdown, the House resoundingly rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s new plan to fund operations and suspend the debt ceiling, as Democrats and dozens of Republicans refused to accommodate his sudden demands. Trump, who is not yet even sworn into the White House, issued his latest demand as House Speaker Mike Johnson arrived early at the Capitol, instantly holing up with some of the most conservative Republicans in the House Freedom Caucus who helped sink Trump’s bill in a spectacular Thursday evening flop. The clock is now racing toward the midnight deadline to fund government operations. Today on AirTalk, we get into the latest news with Mia McCarthy, politics reporter at POLITICO covering Capitol Hill, and Rob Stutzman, Republican political consultant and president of Stutzman Public Affairs.

What regions do you think make up the state of California?

What regions do you think make up the state of California?

This week, SFGATE published a map splitting California into five different regions: NorCal, the Sierra, Central Valley, Central Coast, and SoCal. The map shows the results of a poll that received thousands of responses, combined with input from SFGATE staff members. Readers made clear the Sierra needed to be separated from other regions — but a lot of other suggestions didn’t quite make the cut. Joining us to discuss the poll’s findings is Tessa McLean, California editor for SFGATE.

Do you agree with the SFGATE map? Why or why not? How would you differentiate the different regions of California on map? Give us a call at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

We greet the holiday season with 27th Street Bakery’s classic take on Sweet Potato Pie

Looking for a sweet pie for the holidays? Look no further than L.A.’s own 27th Street Bakery in South Los Angeles. The third-generation family-owned bakery emerged from a neighborhood restaurant in the 1950s when it began to serve clients their take on pies and cakes — most famously, their homemade sweet potato pie. Despite its years, the shop carries the legacy of its original owners, Harry and Sadie Patterson, by selling the very same homemade pies that made the shop into the L.A. culinary landmark it is today. Joining us to walk us through the history of 27th Street Bakery and its classic homemade sweet potato pie is Jeanette Bolden, Co-owner of the 27th Street Bakery.
